There’s been an increase in popularity of electric vehicles throughout Spring Hill to Hernando Beach. Many drivers know about the benefits of the electric vehicle battery and EV battery technology. At Buick GMC Brooksville in Brooksville we will walk you through the types of batteries used in electric vehicles. Read on below, and then, explore our new vehicle inventory.

Electric Vehicle Battery Types

There are several types of batteries used in electric vehicles that vary based upon whether your vehicle is fully electric or plug-in hybrid electric. EV battery technology has advanced the life of batteries to last eight years or 100,000 miles. However, there is an electric vehicle battery that can last between 12 and 15 years.

The four types of batteries used in electric vehicles are: nickel-metal hydride, ultracapacitors, lead-acid, and lithium-ion. Let’s take a closer look at the EV battery technology now:

Nickel-Meta Hydride batteries — This electric vehicle battery is commonly found in hybrid-electric vehicles. Typically, these vehicles don’t receive as much power from external plug-ins, since they use fuel to recharge the battery. Here are a few facts to keep in mind:

  • Have a longer life-cycle than lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries
  • High-cost
  • High self-discharge rate
  • Generates significant heat

Since they are less effective for rechargeable batteries, they’re going to usually be found in hybrid vehicles.

  • Ultracapacitors batteries — These are not your traditional batteries found in Inverness EV models. This electric vehicle battery is typically used as a secondary storage device in electric vehicles, since they level the electrochemical battery load. They also offer extra power when accelerating and regenerating braking.
  • Lead-acid batteries — This electric vehicle battery is only used to supplement other battery loads. These are safe, reliable, high-powered, and most importantly inexpensive. The downside to these is that they are short-lived and offer poor performance in cold-temperatures.
  • Lithium-ion batteries —This is the most common electric vehicle battery used in electric cars due to their high power-to-weight ratio, excellent temperature performance, and high energy. Their EV battery technology can store a lot of energy for their weight. However, due to their “self-discharge” rate, they have a longer electric battery life than most types of batteries used in electric vehicles.
